We went to the National Book Festival on Saturday and saw Geena Davis and John Green talking about their books. Geena Davis made me tearful because her children’s book is really sweet, about being yourself even if you’re big and loud. You don’t need to shrink yourself to fit on the page. She wrote and illustrated it, which is so impressive because it was her first time illustrating. She also talked about picking up various sports, including archery which she apparently qualified for in the Olympic trials! She’s a real life Mary Sue, but not in an annoying way.

John Green spoke about tuberculosis, of course. He sat with Scott Simon from Weekend Edition on NPR and talked about his book rather than reading from it this time. He also didn’t answer any audience questions, which I found a little funny because I’d been wracking my brain to come up with one while I stood in the line for at least two hours waiting to see him.

The lines were intense and badly organized. Not the authors’ fault! I hope the Library of Congress staff fix that for next year.

USPS Informed Delivery gave me a preview of our mail on Monday, so I spent the whole day knowing I’d been summoned for jury duty. 😩 I let my boss know, and he’s not thrilled because I’m the only person in the D.C. office, so if I’m on jury duty it means our office is closed for at least one random day. And it’s right before Luis and I go on our anniversary trip, so it’s right before the office will be closed already. I feel bad, but it’s not like I want this extra stress. I am interested in the judicial process and stuff, but it’s inconvenient this time. (I did it once in 2011 and it ended when an earthquake happened!)

I’m planning to request a postponement so I at least can do it after our trip. I only have three available days otherwise, and the case could be longer than that, so it’s better to wait until I’m less time-constrained. When I go to jury duty, it will give me an excuse to read a lot, if nothing else. Last time, I finished one Sarah Vowell book and read half of another.

Speaking of books, I’ve fallen into judging books by their cute designs. I try not to let the design alone be the reason I get a book, but I found an autumnal book at Barnes & Noble for five dollars with purchase in the cafe. I was buying a pumpkin spice latte anyway, so… But now that I’m reading it, I’ve realized it’s a young adult romance. It’s not bad, it’s just not what I expected. I guess I assumed it was about college-aged people. I feel like there aren’t enough romances about college kids. At least not enough that my algorithm suggests them to me. Also, the main character dislikes pumpkin spiced lattes. I hope she changes her mind by the end. (I bet she will.)

Last Sunday, we saw Caught Stealing, which is a Darren Aronofsky movie. I don’t usually like his movies, but I gave this one a chance because it looked fun and has a cat as a main part of the plot. I really enjoyed it! I think it’s my favorite of his movies, which I know is a low bar, but still. I’d happily watch it again*. It’s the first non-superhero movie we’ve seen in a while that I liked, actually. Eddington, Weapons, and Honey, Don’t disappointed me.

We’ve got a movie theater subscription, which is a big reason why we see so many movies. I like going to the movies. I missed it during the Covid lockdowns. There usually aren’t very many other people in the theater with us, which I like but it’s also worrisome.

My writing is still going well. I’m at around 73K words now, with Friday night’s total word count goal of 75K words looking more than likely. It’s funny, I’ve been thinking of it as writing 500 words a day, but I’m actually writing a little over 1,000 words a day, split into afternoon and evening sessions. If I was only writing 500 words a day, it would take me forever to finish a novel. I don’t have patience for that.

I’m at an amusing place in the writing process, because I’m almost within the last 10K words of the story but so much is still happening. I’m not yet at the place where the resolution is occurring. I guess you could say I’m in the Break Into 3 beat, moving into The Finale of the Save the Cat beats. I’ve been writing according to my outline and still those beats are aligning with things, which is a sign I’m doing things well! The edit/revision process is going to be a monster, I can already tell. But at least I have the right structure to work with this time, as opposed to other drafts that had more sketches of an outline than an actual outline.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. There’s still plenty more writing before I have to think about editing!

* It gave me some casual nightmares about kidney problems, though. If you see it, you’ll understand.

First of all, a photo of Boo Radley so you know who she is since I’ve been talking about her so much. This is not a recent photo. She doesn’t want to be seen with her cone on. She’s embarrassed about it. But she’s hanging in there.


On Monday, they removed some of her stitches from her ear and tail. They will see her again in two weeks (with her brother Leo who already had a checkup appointment scheduled) to remove the rest. She hates going to the vet, but the medication that sedates her really helps her relax. (She still swiped at the vet once, to let her know she was done with her.)

I’ve thought about this before, though it’s not sleep I would skip. I love sleeping. If I didn’t need to be at work for eight hours, I’d have more time to write, which would make me happy. I’d mostly write, but I’m sure I’d end up watching Internet videos. I wish I had more balance, so I could work but also write.

Thanksgiving is coming up on Thursday (and Friday if you go to two separate meals like Luis and I do.) People always talk about the awkward conversations or the big arguments that happen on Thanksgiving when families get together. Fortunately for us, we don’t have a lot of family members who disagree with us and pick fights. Our extended families don’t come over for Thanksgiving, which means things aren’t as stressful too. I can’t imagine having everyone in my family over for the holidays. A lot of people like it, I guess, but… No thanks. I’ve rarely done that.

I have vague memories from when I was little of spending Christmas in Tacoma, Washington, with my extended family there. Grandma accidentally bumped the tree, and it almost landed on my head. I know this from stories I’ve been told.

Having the holidays with the family we usually see is nicer and easier, so it doesn’t feel like such a performance. Better to see the extended family at other times, when we can focus more on seeing them and less on making a bunch of food or decorating. Then again, a lot of the time we’ve seen them has been at weddings…

For my writing update, I reached 50,000 Words! 🎉

I enjoyed writing the scene I wrote yesterday. It helped me easily get to this milestone. Hopefully, the rest of the writing will go as well as writing the first portion. It’s currently 56% finished, according to Pacemaker.

After today (overall goal: 52,000 words) I will have a mini break for Thanksgiving and then I’ll jump right back in.

I plan to fill myself with sweet potatoes, as I do every year.

Falling for the first time.

Reader, I make no secret that I have unilateral hearing loss. When I was about two, I had a too-high fever treated by (according to my mom) a too-high dose of medication administered by a military base doctor. The little hairs in my cochlea were destroyed, so my right ear is purely for symmetry aesthetics.

Aside from not being able to hear on that side (think George Bailey) I also don’t have great balance. This was exemplified on Sunday. I was walking with my husband, a bit distracted by distant firetrucks, when I tripped on the sidewalk and fell. I scraped my left arm pretty well, bleeding near my elbow and scratches all along the side of my hand. I also bruised both knees (no holes in my jeans, though! Explain that!) And I have a mysterious scrape on my right wrist and a tiny one on my right middle finger’s knuckle. For three days, my body was sore, and moving my arms was achy. I’m finally feeling more normal today, except for an annoying persistent ache by my elbow where I took the most damage.

I didn’t break or sprain anything. I didn’t even damage my glasses. Luis said he was worried I’d hurt my “pretty face” and he was impressed that I caught myself so I didn’t hurt myself worse.

I can’t remember falling like that before. I’m sure, since I have bad balance, I have taken falls before but they must’ve been when I was a kid. I remember falling off my bike, but that’s a different situation. I trip often, but this was the first time in recent memory the pavement beat me. Falling felt so strange, too. As it was happening, everything felt like it slowed down and sped up at the same time. When I first tripped, it felt like a normal, run-of-the-mill trip and I’d just catch myself. But then I kept falling and I got scared. I yelped out something like “Noo!” that I remember thinking, even at the time, sounded so silly.

When Luis came to see if I was okay or needed help, I started laughing. I had a choice in that moment, to start crying or to laugh it off. I chose laughter. It was close, though. Pain is painful and falling is scary.

And that is why I didn’t write on Sunday or Monday. I rested my body and allowed myself to recover instead of trying to type through the pain or think of cute things when I was feeling freaked out by the experience. I’m glad I don’t fall often. I’m afraid of that particular part of sidewalk now.

I wrote over two thousand words yesterday, so my story is no worse for wear.

I was thinking yesterday about the unhelpful thoughts I give myself sometimes. It’s like an anti-pep talk. I tell myself “It’s okay, you can stop now. You don’t need to write more.” Even though I want to write more and my writing goal for the day is totally attainable. For example, yesterday I made my goal be to reach 18K words from 16K words. That’s my normal word count goal (on a good day) so it’s no problem. But sometimes my mind plays tricks on me and starts wanting me to slack off. I got to 17K and fought with my mind until I pushed myself to 18K. Because stopping at 17,500 words is not okay on my watch.

I know how to fall and get back up without breaking anything, not even my glasses. Two thousand words can’t keep me down.

The other day, I checked out the audiobook of The Devil Wears Prada (the library doesn’t have a physical copy.) It’s interesting to hear the book version after seeing the movie version a few times. Andy is not very likable in the book. I think it’s mostly because being inside her head shows how judgmental and whiny she is. Also, the audiobook has quite a few questionable stereotypical accents.

I used to think my novel was a little similar to this one, but my story is nowhere near as focused on work stuff. I think I’d lose my mind if I wrote about the characters’ tasks more than I needed to.

My writing is going smoothly. I’m over halfway through the new first draft! The new, tighter plot outline has made a big difference. I also changed the title again (haha) because my older title was pretty generic. It probably won’t surprise you that my new title is inspired by Kermit. 🐸

It struck me for the first time last week that my word count goal doesn’t have to be the total word count of my finished novel. I’ll hit 84K words and then I not only can but should go back in and add scenes I want to add while I’m revising it. I used to think (for some reason) that the word count I was aiming for was hard and fast. My real word count that I shouldn’t go over is around 90K, which gives me plenty of room for refining details, closing plot holes, etc.

We are gathered here today to get through this thing called “life.”

It is finally the end of May. This month has been rough. One of my friends died, then my parents’ young cat died, then my grandfather died.

But it’s about to be June! My parents got a new kitten, to be friends with their other cat who was very confused where her brother went. 🥲

Focusing on writing this month hasn’t been the easiest, but I just crossed over 38K words. That’s something! My goal is 40K total by the end of the day. This go around, I’ve been leaning into “the weekend will be catch-up time” mentality. So far, so okay.

My outline is easier to follow this time, so I’m not left sitting there in front of my manuscript thinking, “Now what?” It’s amazing what a clear plot can do. I went into it thinking it would be loosely based on Cinderella. Now I think the “loosely” really needs to be emphasized. I don’t even think it’s worth mentioning in my query letter*.

Here’s to a better and even more productive June!

*I’m not even thinking about sending those out again until this new version has been edited and beta’ed and probably rewritten at least one more time. Isn’t writing FUN?

I’m the type of person who schedules things. I have a Google Calendar for my personal plans. It contains everything from what we’re having for dinner tonight to our weekend activities to the novels I want to work on. It helps keep me on track, even if I only put “Write 2K” on a date. I think it might partially be guilt if I don’t do what it says, but I’ll take it. 😅

Aside from Calendar, I also utilize Pacemaker to keep my word count on track. I plan to write a NaNoWriMo+ novel this year since I don’t have plans to travel in November. The + means it will go past November because it will be longer than 50K words (unless I fail.) I’m going to tackle an old story I didn’t truly finish back in 2010, back when NaNoWriMo was the only time of year I really sat down and wrote stories. I got the story to 50K, but then just… stopped writing it.

I’m going to finish it and make it better this year! That’s one of my plans anyway.

So, my slate for the year is finishing/revising two romance novels and finishing/revising a young adult fantasy.

I’m ambitious. But it’s good to have goals.

With a refreshed and renewed outlook, I’m confident I’ll be finished with my new novel’s first draft on December 22nd.

It helps that we watched the movie that inspired it (it’s an annual kind of movie) and I’ve been continuing to watch Christine Riccio‘s book-writing vlogs for extra inspiration (of the relatable, cathartic variety.)

One thing I’m going to try to keep up with my writing from now on is not pressuring myself and just writing the story. I get too excited and ahead of myself, and that just puts too much pressure on me. I have two stories to polish and perfect, and it’s enjoyable to play with them. There’s no reason for me to think too far ahead. I’m not even going to think about queries until both novels have been heavily revised. Then we’ll go from there.

Have Christine’s videos made me want to thoroughly edit before sending out again? Yes. Am I a little jealous, though, that she can write a 160,000 word draft? Also yes. My editing brain is just like “?!” about it, because that’s far too long! 😆 My beta reading friends would not be happy with me if I gave them a draft that long.

Anyway, otherwise, as I said in my video up above, I’m looking forward to Christmas/New Year’s. I’m planning to take a break from writing for at least a week in January. We’ll see how that goes.

Currently paused my writing at 48,484 to post this update. I do love it when my palindrome word counts look like that.

I didn’t reach the NaNoWriMo goal, but I plan to hit the 50,000 words today! Just have to knuckle down (well, fingertip down) and write through the mess.

The second draft will be a monster to edit and rewrite, but I’m looking forward to it because it will improve my story. That’s the point, right? I won’t even bother printing my first draft; there are too many changes to make. I don’t want to waste paper, darn it.

Happy week three of NaNoWriMo! How’s your writing going?

I had an advanced Thanksgiving struggle last week, because we celebrated Thanksgiving/Veterans Day with my family on Saturday. (We’re going to be in Guatemala for Thanksgiving with my husband’s family this year.) Long story short: I ended up only writing 200 words on Saturday.

Not my proudest moment. But 200 words is better than 0 words! I’m still in it to win it (in December.)

Currently, I’m sitting at 26,162 words but I plan to turn that into 34,000 words before we leave on Sunday. *Tazmanian devil noise*

…I can’t actually make a Tazmanian devil noise.

With any luck, I’ll be able to write some (SOME) on my phone while I’m away, but I have family to visit and museums to see and a wedding to attend. It’s okay that I’ll be busy.

My goal for this NaNoWriMo, and future WriMos, is to be kind to myself.

As I said in my video up there, writing is supposed to be fun. That’s why it’s something we enjoy doing, right? Sure, it’s challenging at times, but if it’s not fun and exciting, what’s the point? Even published authors who do it as a job are supposed to love writing, right? So don’t beat yourself up about it if you have to take a break. Just don’t stop writing! Write when you can and get back on track as soon as you can.

The second week is the grindiest.

This week has been substantially busier than last week, but I keep pushing myself to hit those word count goals. I’m currently sitting at 18,081 words but I will be up to 20,002 by the end of today, unless something catastrophic happens.

One thing I’ve learned is that it’s difficult to make a mean character nice. That is a challenge for this novel go-around. I’m still enjoying writing it, even if it is sometimes harder to find the motivation than my previous one. I think it’s shaping up to be a good story. 🙂

There’s no way I want anyone to read my first draft this time, though. It needs editing for sure. But thus is the way of first drafts.
