In Superman (2025), Clark tells Lois he’s making her favorite dinner: breakfast. “You love breakfast!” he explains. “For breakfast,” she retorts. This launches them into a big argument about journalistic integrity and Superman’s moral dilemma of whether or not he should get involved in countries’ disputes. The “for breakfast” has stayed with me, though. What starts out as a run-of-the-mill argument turns into this big, philosophical question. I really love James Gunn’s writing.

They’re working on installing a few security cameras in my office, mainly to keep track of the mail handling. I think it’s more of a concern in our Miami office, because it’s much busier and bigger, but they’re trying to be uniform with it and have all of the offices the same. So a guy came to look at the places where we’ll put the cameras, and then we’re going to order them and he’ll install them. This process has taken a long time, but hopefully it will be useful eventually… I don’t foresee misplacing any mail items, but who does? I think it’ll mostly showcase how calm this office is by comparison, and how organized I am. 😇

Last weekend, we saw Weapons. We went into it not knowing much about it. I thought it might be metaphorical about school shootings, so I was prepared to cry. I really like the story structure of it. The perspectives change, like the screen says Justine and then we see her part of the story, then James or whatever. I thought that was cool. It all pieces together nicely and things gradually make more sense the more you see. I thought it was building up to something interesting and (like I said) tragic. But then it just got dumb. It became less unique in the last bit of it. There were still some good moments, but I get annoyed at certain types of movies. I don’t want to give it away, but if you’ve seen it you know what I mean. Hereditary is the same way. I really liked it until the end. This one could’ve done so much more. Also, there was a random moment that seemed like it was referencing school shootings, but then it never came back*.

So frustrating. I’m surprised how well-reviewed it is. I guess no one else is over it like I am.

We have some fun, casual Labor Day weekend plans. We’re going to see Honey Don’t! starring Margaret Qualley and Aubrey Plaza. I saw the poster a few weeks ago and knew we needed to see it because I like both of them, and I like the 70s aesthetic. We’re also going to have dinner with my parents at Hell’s Kitchen, Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant. We’ve been there once before, and once in London. We like him. Especially his sticky toffee pudding. And then on Labor Day, we’re going to relax and enjoy the day off. I hope to finish reading at least one of the books I’m reading. (Not House of Leaves; that’s going to take me at least a year to finish.)

We started watching One Night in Idaho, about those poor college students who were murdered in their house. I don’t know very much about it yet, just that it’s sad and horrible. I didn’t know one of the victims was a triplet. His poor brother and sister… Sometimes it feels weird to watch things like this for fun, but y’know. It’s interesting and a way of remembering those lost. It’s also not as exploitative as some of those true crime shows can be.

On the writing front, I’m at 64K words and the pieces are all falling nicely into place. I’ve noticed I’m having an easier time pinpointing the places to edit, and the things I know have to change. Sometimes I just wish I could wave my hands and make paragraphs better, like when the kids decorate the tree in A Charlie Brown Christmas.

* Please don’t misunderstand me. A movie about school shootings would be very sad and I’m not sure if I’d be comfortable going into one knowing that’s what it is. I just thought it would be alluding to that sort of subject matter, and be a drama, not a horror movie. This is why reading about movies first is sometimes better.

I’m not the kinda girl who gives up just like that, oh no.

We’ve created a TV schedule for our weeks, sticking to the same few shows until we finish them/the season and then watching different things. It used to be that we’d start watching a show, get distracted by something else, and then forget about the show. Granted, the shows in question were classics like Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart Show, and Golden Girls so we’re already more than behind on them, but you know what I mean. It’s been nice to think, “Oh, it’s Tuesday: Shogun night.” I like watching things that others are watching, so I don’t feel like we’re missing out. Shogun, The Bear, and Hacks are so good! Cable used to be like that, but you couldn’t skip ads or pause to go to the bathroom, so streaming is still more convenient.

Cable is going to go away. It’s not really a question. The only question is, how soon? It kind of relates to Hacks, in a way. Why have a late night talk show anymore?

The books I’m reading are enjoyable and quite different from each other. Aside from still weathering the storm that is House of Leaves (which is amazing! It’s just a dense textbook written by a crazy man,) I’m also reading A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston and Island by Aldous Huxley. Ashley Poston’s so fun, and her novels appeal to my interests because they’re humorous romances involving ghosts or imaginary characters (within the story; obviously all novel characters are imaginary.) I previously read and had to own The Dead Romantics because I liked it so much, and this novel is no different. It also has a gorgeous cover. The Aldous Huxley book is in a similar vein to Brave New World, but it doesn’t feel as bleak. I’m not far into it yet, though. It’s fun to read him discussing more modern things, since he wrote it in the 60s. It also feels prescient about what’s going on in D.C., which I kind of hate. 🙃 History just repeats and repeats itself… It needs to stop.

I’m looking forward to seeing John Green at the National Book Festival, though I’m still nervous about being in D.C. I’m always nervous about being in D.C., and I have to go there a lot for work. It will be nice to see him again! I wish I could talk to him in person, but he’s not doing a book signing or anything, so the chances are slim. I waited like a loser after his book reading in March, so we’ll see if I wait to try and spot him again. I understand he doesn’t like social situations much. I don’t either. I just really like him. He means so much to Luis and me.

Reading the Ashley Poston book has given me some useful plot guidepost ideas. I’m around the same page number in her book as well as in my writing, so I can’t help comparing where the characters are in their respective arcs. I may have mentioned before that A Novel Love Story is a good comp for my current work-in-progress, even though my story doesn’t involve any magical realism. It’d be fun to add some of that, but I don’t know how and my story already has a lot going on. I could keep it in mind, but maybe for another story. I’m currently within the “Dark Night of the Soul” part of the story, which means everything sucks for my main characters. Things are piecing together and building up to what’ll hopefully be a satisfying finale. I just realized I’ve been subconsciously following the Save The Cat beats without even marking them all out like that in my outline.

That’s pretty freaking cool.

We had a nice birthday celebration for Luis last weekend. It was laid back and fun, and not so jam-packed with activities that we couldn’t relax and enjoy it. Sometimes, we pack a lot into our weekends and/or vacations, because we want to get a lot done, but there’s something to be said for just getting a fancy drink and seeing a movie. We still went to a bunch of different food places around town, for all the birthday deals. My favorite was a Redbull Sunrise, which I paid for because it wasn’t part of a deal. I also got two giant coffees which weren’t part of birthday deals. Maybe I’m bad at getting deals. 😂

The news for DC has been scary, because I work there and we go there so often. It really isn’t that violent compared to other cities in the country. People there are nice and easy-going, for the most part. I think this is some sort of aggressive move to prevent protests and groups of people gathering to dissent. But it’s putting everyone in the city on edge and it’s not pleasant to worry about this crap when I’m trying to get my work done and travel to and from work safely. And that’s only one of the issues from this week. He’s giving all of us issues.

We have fun future plans, but of course they come with anxiety now. Everything comes with anxiety.

This coming weekend, we’re going to celebrate with friends for Luis’s birthday, including a neighborhood block party that just so happens to also fall this weekend. We’re going to bring our friends from our own party to that party. Hopefully it won’t rain. He’s planning to make a bunch of empanadas to bring, since it’s potluck. He makes them with crescent rolls. So good!

Then we’re going to a great local Japanese place with his family for more belated festivities. They have a delicious vegetarian dragon roll that’s so good I wrote about it in my novel. I used to wonder if it could be done, but of course it can be done!

Speaking of writing, I’m now within the last 30K words of my novel draft. I had fun writing about a side character last night, describing him and showing him in person for the first time in the story. I wondered if I was committing the Dickens sin of introducing a character too late in the novel. He’s featured in several chats and texts with the main character beforehand, so I think it’s okay… Sometimes people don’t hang out with other people in person as much. His late introduction reminds me of Maureen Johnson in Rent. I’d argue this character matters less to the story than Maureen does. But he’s nonetheless interesting!

I’m toying with the idea of a romantic subplot featuring the two side characters. It might be too cheesy, but it’s the kind of cheesy that the genre is known for!

Luis and I attended the annual Esther Day Virtual Party on Sunday. Esther Day is a birthday celebration of Esther Earl, a Nerdfighter who died of thyroid cancer when she was sixteen. When asked how she wanted to be remembered, she said she would like everyone to take the day to celebrate platonic love and saying “I love you” to people who you might not say it to as often as you want or should; maybe it makes you feel a little uncomfortable because it’s not said as often. It’s a really sweet way to celebrate Esther and her family and the people we love in our lives. It’s just nice. It’s a nice hug of a day.

Do you want a personal example of how kind John Green is? He and his wife Sarah were guests in the virtual party livestream, and he did a Q&A like he often does, because he loves to answer questions and offer “dubious advice.” Luis has been anxious about home repair stuff, as I think I’ve mentioned here, so I casually asked John if he has any advice for dealing with the anxiety. John not only gave us some advice—watch YouTube videos on home repairs (which we can’t really do for our roof, ha.)—he also took the time to give us a shout-out like, “Sara and Luis! We’re fully invested in their marriage.” Which made us both very touched and smiley for the rest of the livestream. And so now, when we’re stressed about home repair stuff, which of course we will keep being stressed about but it’s normal and it will be fine, we can think about John’s shout-out and words of advice, which boil down to us not being alone. 💚

Luis’s birthday is this Saturday! We were originally going to have a birthday party for him because it’s a Saturday and how convenient, but it’s unfortunately a Saturday in summer so all our friends are busy*. But we’re going to see The Naked Gun which is a remake of one of his favorite movies, and we’re going to a restaurant he really likes, and I’m going to make the weekend all about him and what he wants. That’s my other gift to him this year. (I also got him a Switch 2 back in July, which he’s been playing every day since I told him he needed it and we rushed out and got it.) We also also might go see Inter Miami play DC in a few weeks, if we can muster up the enthusiasm since Messi probably won’t play. Busquets will still be there! And De Paul! And Alba! And Suarez! Plenty of fun players, but no one’s as cool as Messi, so we’ll see about that.

We’re still thinking about Ozzy Osbourne. Luis is a big fan, so he’s been showing me all kinds of stuff and playing songs for me. We started watching The Osbournes because I figured it would at least be amusing. It was my idea. It’s fun to learn about the family. It’s definitely silly, but it’s also kind of sweet in a weird way. They had way, way too many dogs and didn’t really know how to take care of them. There’s a metaphor in there somewhere.

My writing is still going well. I can see how the story plot is progressing as planned, which is very exciting. I’m almost to 50K words. I was looking through my calendar the other day and realized it won’t be long until I’m finished with this draft. September 26th is my goal end date, and that’s not so far away now.

I wish there was a word to describe how good it feels when everything seems to fall into place.

* We are still going to have a party with friends, it’s just not going to be on his actual birthday.

One thing I will never understand is people who are on their phones in the movie theater. Can they not go two hours without checking their phone? Why not just stay home then? No one’s forcing them to go to the movies. Luis and I went to see The Fantastic 4 and this couple next to us would not stop looking at their phones, with their screens as bright as could be. It was so rude and distracting. We’re going to see the movie again this weekend, partially because we were so distracted.

And also because I want to see Pedro Pascal again. 🥰

I still want to see Superman again, too. Those two movies go well together.

Friday is the day I receive my last paycheck from my old job. It’s crazy to think about how all that went down. It only took me one week to get a new job, and so far it’s going well. I don’t spend all my time dreading things like I used to. Sure, there are difficult days, but they usually turn out totally fine. My coworkers, though they’re all remote, are all helpful and kind. I’m very lucky.

I’m also looking forward to next year, when I will have more vacation days. Can you blame me?

Luis and I will be buying insurance together once my old job’s insurance ends this week as well. I hope we can find something good that doesn’t make us have to change too many of our doctors (if any.) We went to get check-ups the other weekend and the doctor called me so many times, and sent me a letter in the mail, just to tell me my test results were normal. At least they’re thorough.

Speaking of insurance, we’re also dealing with some fun home insurance stuff. Our roof needs to be replaced because it’s old and it’s been raining so often, there are starting to be marks on our upstairs ceiling. It’s a tell-tale sign. We spent so much time and money fixing up our bathroom, so I’d rather not let the roof create a leak in there. Luis was excited about getting a metal roof with solar panels, but we’ve since realized it’ll be better to get more energy-efficient shingles instead. Metal roofs look cool, but they’re so expensive.

It bothers me that it’s “roofs” and not “rooves.”

My writing is still going strong. I just passed the halfway point of my novel, so I’m getting into some of the heavier plot stuff. I’m trying not to be so hung up on things being 100% right in this first draft. I’m going to have to edit things and make changes. The good thing is, I have ideas about what those changes are already, so it’s not going to come as some big surprise that I have to make them. It also helps, of course, always, that Luis is reading through my chapters as I go and giving me pointers from a reader perspective, too. I think my new writing process works best for me. Plus I’m not writing all hours of the day when I have free time, so I’m feeling more balanced.

Can you believe it’s going to be August on Friday?

It’s symbolic, of course.

There are currently three major news stories in the U.S.: the Epstein client list, the Coldplay cheater cam, and Colbert losing his show because CBS is spineless. I’m so angry on Stephen Colbert’s behalf, as many other people are. Legions of people have come out in support of him, which is nice to see. I hope he finds a better avenue for his show, but it sucks too because a lot of his staff are going to lose their jobs. It’ll be easier for him than for them.

A fourth major news story happened yesterday while I was getting ready to leave work. Ozzy Osbourne died, only a few weeks after his big farewell concert with Black Sabbath. 😢 I wasn’t a huge fan or anything, but I still shed a few tears. Especially when Puddles Pity Party did a tribute when he opened at the concert yesterday. He sang a slow ballad version of “Crazy Train” with a photo of young Ozzy on the screen behind him, and my face was wet.

Puddles Pity Party was otherwise funny, and unique. He opened for Weird Al. We saw Weird Al for the second time! The last time we saw him was 9 years ago. We were so close this time! Center Row F, so maybe 10 rows from the stage. I didn’t need to watch him on the screen this time, which is always awesome. The show was different, but it had many of the same songs and video clips from last time. It’d be difficult not to; as Luis pointed out, it’s not like he’s been in a hundred new TV shows and movies since 2016. He did a big medley of all the classic songs. His costume changes and use of media are impressive. When he did “White & Nerdy” I briefly worried he might Segway off the stage, but he didn’t. He’s a professional.

I went to bed an hour late last night because of Weird Al. I’m groggy, but it was worth it.

On Saturday, Luis and I got food poisoning. Typical me, I then spent the next two days being paranoid about it, but I got over it within 24 hours. We’re going to avoid the place that made us sick, though, just to be safe. The worst thing about it, at least in my case, was that it came out of nowhere. I was fine one minute and then–. Bodies can be the worst sometimes. Then again, bodies are like that in order to keep us alive…

Speaking of being sick*, we saw Eddington, the new movie starring Pedro Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix, and Emma Stone (she’s not in it that much.) It’s… certainly a movie. It’s a very long, confusing movie. I’m not sure what Ari Aster’s message was supposed to be. It felt oddly timed. I prefer Midsommar and Hereditary. The acting and cinematography were good, but the writing was ehh. Disappointing. I thought the promotional campaign with the Tiktok-esque stuff was more interesting.

I’ve read quite a few articles and social media posts about Gen Z not liking sex scenes in novels and movies. It’s a turn-off for them, pun intended. In my opinion, sex scenes are necessary and expected in romance novels, at least the ones that are widely popular. That’s not to say they have to be heavily graphic or anything, but sex is one way of becoming intimately close with a partner, so it’s a way for the romantic leads to bond. It shouldn’t be the only way they bond, but it’s realistic and natural. If done well, sex scenes can even be cute.

I err on the side of cute. I do my best to always make them cute. There are no “throbbing members” to be found in my novels, I promise. And the scenes move the plot forward and matter to the characters, they’re not just in there because romance = sex. That’s such a shallow way of viewing both romance and sex.

Wish I could fly like Superman.

Like millions of other people, we saw Superman last weekend. I am a fan of James Gunn, and I really liked what he did with the characters and the world. Leave it to him to pick a few random side characters as the comic relief/help for the main hero. Nicholas Hoult was also really good as Lex Luther. I’ve liked him in everything I’ve seen him in, including when he was elevenish in About A Boy. And let’s not forget about Krypto. He reminded me of our dog Scout. I was tearful when he first appeared, but thankfully I didn’t cry every time I saw him. That would’ve been very dehydrating.

A big aspect of my job is mail handling. There are a lot of folks who don’t seem to understand how mail works. For instance, you have to let people know your address if you want to get mail delivered to it. It doesn’t just magically arrive because you want it to. I’ve gotten pretty good at forwarding people’s mail to them, but the patient FedEx worker alerted me yesterday morning that they don’t deliver to P.O. Boxes. I’d packed up some mail nicely to send to one, but I had to carefully repackage it to go via USPS. Thankfully I didn’t lose much time on it. I’m trying to do better at not checking the tracking or requests when I’m not at work. I become too invested in each delivery and want to make sure they work out well, but I need to stop caring so much. It’s not my problem once things are sent!

Luis and I went out for a fancy dinner on the 14th, at a place really close to my office. Unfortunately, it decided to storm and he forgot his umbrella, but it was okay. It calmed down right as he arrived at my building to cross the street. Next month, we’re planning to go to another place near my office. One of the perks of my job is that there are fun places around. There’s also a big park full of squirrels, pigeons, and ducks.

I feel like a broken record about this, but writing 500 words each day works so well for me. It allows me to immerse myself in the scenes and think about them when I’m not pressured to write things down. For instance, I wrote 500 words today and now I’m planning what comes next before writing it. In the past, I used to crank out 2,000 words a day and I think a lot of it was with the “gotta fill this quota” mentality I no longer have. I’m enjoying my story more as I work on it, and I think it will help when it comes time to edit things, too because my writing sessions are more focused on the plot and moving things forward. I used to digress and meander in my writing a lot more, largely because I thought, “That’ll get more words!”

This really has become an adventure in learning how to write better. I know a lot of people have this issue with their writing. They get burnt out thinking they’ve got to write as much as Stephen King each day. They think too much in terms of the word count needed to make a novel and not the words needed to make a good one.

I’m going to write 500 more words later, and I know more or less what they will be.

Drunk on wine, I’m amazing.

One of the bad things about holiday vacations is coming back to work on the Monday afterward. Luis and I had a nice time last weekend, spending time together and with family. We saw This is Spinal Tap in theaters for the first time, for the 41st anniversary. It’s totally because they’re coming out with a sequel soon. At the end of the showing, they included a brief preview of the sequel and the audience laughed just at the sight of the way they look now, which is kind of mean but also fair. They reminded me of The Beatles during the “When I’m Sixty-Four” scene in Yellow Submarine.

Then, on Sunday, we went to the mall and bought the Nintendo Switch 2 for Luis’s early birthday present! It doesn’t seem that different from the original Switch to me, but it has a few improvements. And who knows? I might become amazing at Mario Kart by the time we get another game. I just hope it stops hurting my hand. I think I steer too intensely.

Now that the 4th of July is over, I’m not going to have a weekday off from work until Labor Day at the beginning of September. We have a few fun things planned before then, but there’s something to be said for having time off when I’d normally have to wake up early and commute. We’re seeing Weird Al on a Tuesday night, and I’m hoping I won’t be very tired during it and very tired the next day.

There was a Valley Girl on my train this morning. She was talking on her phone and she kept saying “For sure” and “Totally” and I was doing my best not to crack up the entire time she stood in front of me. At one point, she described her whole outfit and said something about needing to go shopping with her mom. “With the train, it takes me, like, fifteen minutes to walk. If I had to walk to work, it would take me, like, four hours. My coworker walks, like, half an hour to work each day. You know that’s not me.”

I did not expect to hear that accent in the D.C. area.

While working on a scene in my novel involving the DC Book Festival, I learned John Green is coming to the DC Book Festival this year, in September! So art is imitating life again. I’ll have to make mental notes of details I can include in the edits. The last time Luis and I saw him at the Book Fest, it was summer of 2012. It’s going to be inside the convention center this time, so it’ll be much cooler than doing it on the Mall like they used to. I hope I can meet him again! I can never meet John Green too many times. ✨

It’s confusing these days.

Last weekend was really fun. The party for Luis’s mom was great, and he made an awesome video with a bunch of his family members wishing his mom a happy birthday. Then he made a speech and it was so cute. I may be biased, but my husband is amazing. 🥰  Then the next day, we went to the Air & Space Museum and spent a few hours looking at the updated exhibits. I had a margarita in a can! I did not expect anything like that to be available in their cafe. Next month, more new exhibits are opening, including one that features Amelia Earhart. Just more reasons to go back again. We still need to visit the one in Virginia, too. That’s where they’re keeping Enola Gay these days.

Luis bought me a copy of the library book I was reading, so for a brief period I had two nearly identical copies of The Ex Talk. I’m reading my own copy now. My used copy is a retired library book, so I went from reading one library book to another. This one’s cover is laminated! I love owning old library books. They tell stories of their own.

He also got me a copy of Ashley Poston’s new novel, Sounds Like Love. I love her covers. Whoever designs them deserves extra points. I’m planning to read her other gorgeous novel, A Novel Love Story next.

We’re getting together with my family on the 4th of July. We always go see them and have food and watch the DC fireworks celebration, and then we set off a few small fireworks in the street outside the house. It’s always been about spending time with family for me, more than patriotism, really. It’s especially like that now.

I’m just grateful for a day off.

My writing is progressing well. I’m writing a little over a chapter a week, so I can really feel it coming along. I’ve also started thinking ahead and putting fun ideas in my outline, so I remember to actually use them. I’ve definitely thought of things to do and then forgotten about them, in the past. The first time I wrote this story, back in 2020, I didn’t even have an outline. It’s come a long way.

I was reading The Ex Talk last night and bits of it were aligning well with my story’s themes. I thought, “Yes! This really is a perfect comp.” It’s relatable to my life, too. I found this book just by searching for romance novels with workplace conflicts. I’m so glad I found it.

If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow, don’t be alarmed now.

There’s a horrible heatwave in a lot of the US right now. It’s fine if you can be inside, in the air conditioning, but whenever I walk to/from the Metro and bus, it’s so sticky. I wore a dress to work today in order to stay cool. I’m not a fan of wearing dresses, especially because the AC can make me cold and my legs aren’t covered. But it’s been warm enough inside so it’s okay.

I doubt I’ll wear a dress again tomorrow, though. I need to get some fashionable, work appropriate shorts or maybe some loose linen pants. I told myself I’d go shopping for new work clothes and then I learned I could wear jeans and t-shirts so I haven’t bothered.

On Sunday, Luis and I are finally going to the Air & Space Museum. I got timed passes and everything, like a real tourist. (You have to get timed passes to enter.) Not too much later than the 14th. It’s an important place to us, and it’s mentioned in my novel, so it’s part research but mostly just a nice place for us to return to every once in a while. We’re going to check out the food court. When we first met, it was upstairs and completely McDonald’s. A lot has changed in thirteen years.

I have a unique addiction that thankfully doesn’t happen all the time. I think I may have mentioned it before. I’ve gotten in the strange habit of getting a library book, deciding I want to keep it, and either buying it or asking my husband to buy it for me. It’s happened at least four times that I can remember: Georgie, All Along, Very Sincerely Yours, The Good Part, and now The Ex Talk. All of them have been used as comp titles. I love all of them. So there.

So far, I’ve purchased way fewer books this year than the past few years. I’ve only bought like three, and it’s June. I’m doing well. I need to keep reading the ones I already own, though. The little free libraries in my neighborhood are dangerous for my bookshelf.

Using my calendar for scheduling writing has been going well. I write about 1,000 words a day, broken up into 500 at the office and 500 in the evening when I’m home. It helps to break it up like that so I don’t ever feel stuck. It gives me time to think about things and plan it out, instead of feeling like I need to get it right then and there. I breeze through 500 words easily, and I calculated things out — if I keep writing at my current pace, I should be finished with this draft at the end of September. Just have to avoid skipping writing time because I feel tired and would rather watch TV.

TV can always wait.
