One of the first things we didn’t like about this season was Kimiko talking. It sounds mean, but the way she talks doesn’t fit her character. She’s too silly. I also don’t know if I forgot something, but how was she talking? Maybe if they didn’t have nearly two years between seasons, people would remember. But her gruff, violent attitude was missed this season. Honestly, I found Frenchie more than a little irritating too, so when he died I was kind of…relieved? His character had run out of steam, and his fake accent was becoming cartoony, and not in a good way.
I really liked Oh Father, not only because he’s portrayed by Daveed Diggs, but because he was larger than life and interesting, so I was looking forward to seeing more of his particular craziness. He was built up all season and his death felt very sudden and just “oh” instead of impactful. I felt similarly about the death of the Deep. I fully expected a whole ocean of sealife to rip him apart, but instead it was just…giant squid. They went the Watchmen route. I was glad to see Starlight beat the krill out of him first, though. That was good.
And then there’s Homelander, of course. I mostly liked Homelander’s ending. Seeing him as a whining, depowered, normal person (if it’s at all possible for him to ever be normal) was satisfying. My main complaint here is that his end felt kind of rushed. I would’ve liked to see more time given to normie Homelander. Maybe more people beating him up? I don’t know. Mostly good, but could’ve been a little stronger, in my opinion.
The ending with “petit Hughie” and Billy Butcher, though? Perfect. No notes.
